EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy.  EMDR is a body-mind integrated therapy, founded on the basis that when we experience trauma our brain processes and stores memories incorrectly.  It has been proven to be highly effective for those who have experienced trauma.

I work with ego states and internal family systems when working with EMDR.  This  takes into consideration early attachment patterns and experiences and the trauma responses that have themselves become patterns.  I also recognize that we store trauma in our body. In EMDR we utilize Bilateral Stimulation to access and disrupt disturbing memories to heal the whole person.

When trauma is unprocessed and an event happens that may be similar or that has an even just an element of a disturbing event, the brain reacts as if the original disturbing event is happening.

EMDR helps move the storage of disturbing memories to a more functional part of the brain that can recognize that the event as actually being in the past. A real physical change happens in the EMDR process.  Events that previously activated the brain into over reaction no longer have that effect. Once disturbing memories are processed through EMDR, we are able to react to the present, with out the past experiences interfering.
